Chimney testing

Do you need your chimney tested?

We often get the request “can you please test my chimney”. We of course can test your chimney, but the test we do depends on why you’re having it done.

Having a woodburner fitted:

For this, we’d recommend having the chimney thoroughly swept and a cctv inspection carried out. The sweeping is to make sure there is no combustible soot which could be ignited by the heat from the flue that is installed for the wood burner, or even corrode the liner due to its acidity. The camera inspection is to ensure the flue will actually fit and there are no holes in the midfeathera, combustibles in the chimney etc.

Having an open fire fitted:

For this we would recommend a chimney integrity test and a camera inspection. The camera inspection is to ensure the chimney is clear and of sufficient cross section, with no breaks etc. Then the integrity test, carried out with either a pressure test machine or smoke, is performed to ensure the chimney is sufficiently sound to safely accommodate an open fire.

Having a gas fire fitted:

For the installation of a gas fire, we’d recommend following the same procedure as above for open fires.

Once it’s tested..

Once we’ve performed our tests, we will give you a list of problems and remedial work to be carried out. Sometimes chimneys require rebuilding; sometimes they need repointing; sometimes they need relining; sometimes they can’t be used at all.
