Does a woodburner need servicing?

Categorically YES! Servicing, sweeping and general maintainence are essential to keep your fire working effiicently, to keep emissions to the minimum and prevent carbon monoxide spilling into the property.

Your stove will have some form of baffle. This is in place to keep the heat and smoke in the stove for longer in order to improve efficiency, burn off the smoke to reduce emissions and increase heat output. These baffles can clog easily, so during a service, they’re always removed and cleared of dust and debris.

Next, the stove bricks will be dismantled as much as possible. This allows the area behind the bricks to be cleaned to reduce the risk of the bricks cracking and rusting to the stove body behind the bricks. If there is any damage to the bricks, new bricks can be ordered if necessary.

As well as this, the stove is given a good looking over: The rope seal is thoroughly inspected. The glass is inspected and cleaned as necessary. The fire cement seals on the pipes are checked and repaired if necessary. Carbon monoxide alarms are checked.

The most important part of the service is the sweeping of the chimney. This ensures the flue way is clear and allowing the efficient relsease of products of combustion, and reduces risk of chimney fire. Also by doing this, the condition of the flue can be checked.

Also as part of a full stove service is a flue draught reading. This is to ensure the chimney draught is within the levels prescribed by the manufacturer.
