Coffee logs for sale
Coffee logs have been on the market in the UK since 2016. An innovative idea that was thought up when a student noticed an oil film sitting at the top of his cold Americano. This triggered a thought that coffee, or even the recycled coffee grounds, could be a fuel source.
Initially he produced coffee derived biomass pellets, and this was the beginning of Bio-Bean, back in 2013. The business grew rapidly, setting up coffee collection services across the UK, taking away the used coffee grounds. By 2015 they had built the world’s first coffee recycling plant.

The coffee logs were said to be an ‘environmentally friendly coffee log made only from recycled coffee’. Each log containing the waste from around 20 cups of coffee.
Bio-Bean claimed that the coffee logs achieved burn temperatures 20% in excess of kiln dried logs. Moreover, it’s said that the emissions produced when using the coffee for fuel were 130% less than if the grounds were disposed of in the normal way.
Such was their popularity coffee logs were stocked in stores like Tesco, B & Q, Waitrose, Morrisons and Asda.
Disaster for coffee logs lovers
It has been said that finances at Bio-Bean weren’t doing as well as they could over the past couple of years. One reason could be that coffee logs were never approved for use in a smoke control area, even though cities would likely have been the biggest market for Bio-Bean, given the quest of many city residents to recycle and reduce their carbon footprint.
In late March 2023 disaster struck at the Bio-Bean factory. The coffee grounds drying system caught fire. It was an extremely expensive piece of equipment, and while fortunately nobody was harmed, the dryer couldn’t be salvaged.
As a result of this, and other financial issues, in April 2023 Bio-Bean went into administration. With immediate effect all operations were ceased and staff informed.
Coffee logs unavailable
Unfortunately this spells the end for coffee logs. There currently are no manufacturers of an equivalent product in the UK. Given the high costs of manufacture, it is unlikely that coffee logs will be seen in the UK again.
